In-Site Landscape Architecture, Inc.
In-Site is pleased to announce that one of our residential projects in Del Mar, California was chosen as "Home of the Year" by San Diego Home/ Garden Lifestyles magazine and was published in their February 2012 issue. "I like the way this house sits in its context, packing in a lot of livability without overpowering its neighbors," says Homes of the Year judge Ted Smith. "There's a beautiful continuous flow of spaces. Nothing is overdone." Repeated shapes, patterns and materials bring continuity. Rounded pebbles lend interest to the curved exterior walk and are brought to the interior, in a smaller version, on the shower floor. Sustainable Landscape The site features primarily low-water use/ low maintenance plantings, drip irrigation, and a weather-based irrigation control system. Artificial turf was used as a "green" roof over the subterranean garage. The turf serves as a recreational amenity for the family while adhering to the tight height restrictions on that part of the site. Let the first impression of your home be a positive one with a beautifully landscaped front yard. While landscaping is often no small project, do it well and it’s sure to leave you much more satisfied with your home. While you browse the following front yard landscaping ideas, consider your home’s style, the natural environment around you and how to stay within budget.

1. Go With a Flattering Front Yard Landscape Design

If you’re looking for landscaping ideas in the front yard, the first thing you should do is determine what sorts of features would work well with your home. Traditional homes often look good with a front yard garden with an English style flower garden. Southwestern or Mediterranean style homes in drier climates work well with gravel, native grasses and palm trees. If you’re gathering front yard landscaping ideas for ranch style homes, you’ll want to consider features that complement the long front facade of your home. Climbing vines, a large shade tree or a meandering path to your front door may all help bring out your home’s best qualities.

2. Make a Budget and Stick With It

Looking for simple front yard landscaping ideas on a budget can be tricky, as plants, landscaping materials and hiring contractors can all be pricey. Of course, you can always do part of the project yourself, and hire landscape contractors for other parts. Another way to keep costs down for years to come is to go with front yard landscaping ideas that are low-maintenance, like gravel, patio pavers and native plants. If you like grass or an expensive type of plant, consider planting them in some areas, but filling in the rest of the space with rocks or stones.

3. Use Plants that Complement the Natural Landscape

While you plan out your dream front yard, consider the climate you live in and what sorts of plants and features will feel natural there. Native plants will thrive with the seasons and have a better chance of lasting down the road. Front yard landscaping ideas in Florida that feel natural might be very different from those that work well in Arizona. If you live in a place that doesn’t get a lot of rainfall, you may want to consider a drought tolerant front yard without grass, to keep your own maintenance costs low. Instead, you might browse front yard landscaping ideas with rocks, or adding a welcoming front porch or patio.

On the other hand, if you have a large front yard in a colder environment, you may want to go for a lush flower garden that’ll come into bloom in the spring. Picket fences, trellises and water fountains are all great for creating a beautiful, rustic front yard. One of the most simple front yard landscaping design plans is to plant a flower bed around the border of your home, with grass or gravel all around. Add in wooden planter boxes for a more functional, modern look, and plant whatever you like, from vegetables to roses.
